Do you feel overwhelmed? Spirit has some advice on how to let go. . .

December 6, 2017

Do you feel overwhelmed? Our minds never want to shut down with everything that's going on; we’re an anxiety and fearful ridden world. Bombarded by the daily headlines from the media – constant breaking news – and often, not really sure as to what’s going to happen next doesn't help. This past year has felt more like ten. In our book WTF I’m Trying to Be Spiritual – A Guidebook for Loving Yourself without Fear we are given the practices of love (flexibility, non-judgment, willingness, courage, relinquishing control and honesty/integrity/personal responsibility) by Spirit to use regarding any situation, event, or person(s) including loving ourselves. With all the chaos we face living in today’s world, it’s fitting to look at how we can relinquish control when faced with so much uncertainty – and we can do that by living in the present, the moment of now. Here is an exercise given to us by Spirit found in our companion book WTF I’m Trying to Be Spiritual – A Workbook for Loving Yourself without Fear and one of the big takeaways is using our five-senses to bring us back to awareness.

Exercise: Living in the Now

Spirit always talks about the present and living in the now. The ego is resistant, so you have to remember to breathe! How can you live in your now?

  • Look at your experience as just that without judging it.

  • Speak your truth.

  • Accept where you are at this moment.

  • Enjoy even the smallest details.

  • Discipline yourself to listen.

All of the above are about patience, yes, the dreaded P word again.

Here are some exercises from Spirit for living in the now.

  • Be aware of any judgments.

  • Have a daily quiet time of five to ten minutes (that means no technology).

  • Notice your thoughts (if you’re thinking of the past or future, you’re not in the now).

  • Notice something new every day (while walking, driving, etc.).

  • List activities that would allow you to be in the present and use all five senses. Here are some examples Spirit gave to utilize, but customize them to suit yourself.

    • Be conscious of every step you take while asking, “How am I walking? Where is my weight?”

    • Watch for body tics such as leg twitching or pulling or twisting your hair (this shows anxiousness so you’re not in the moment).

    • Pick a color and be aware of it around you.

    • Drink water, really taste it; feel your hand around the bottle or glass and all the sensations that go with it.

Write your own examples of things to do in the now:

  • gardening (feel the dirt, smell the earth, hear the birds, see the colors)

  • stargazing (hear the wind, smell the air, note the stars against the dark sky)

  •
